The simple trick for cleaning radiators: they’ll be like new

Little by little, the cold is creeping into our homes and we need to get our radiators ready. That’s why experts advise cleaning them before using them

When the cold weather arrives, we turn on the heating almost without thinking. But we rarely realise that, before doing so, it is a good idea to give the radiators a once-over. Over time, dust and dirt accumulate inside them, affecting not only the aesthetics of the home, but also their efficiency. The good news is that keeping them clean requires no effort: there is a trick that is as simple as it is effective and leaves them sparkling in minutes.

Experts agree that cleaning radiators before winter improves energy efficiency and prevents unpleasant odours. Dust acts as an insulating layer that prevents heat from spreading properly. In addition, when heated, these particles can circulate in the air and cause discomfort, especially for people with allergies or respiratory sensitivity.

The most effective method is to use a hairdryer. Yes, the same one we use every day. Just place it on top of the radiator and direct the air inside. The hot air jet causes the accumulated dust to come out of the bottom in a matter of seconds. Of course, it is advisable to place a towel or tray underneath to collect the expelled dirt and prevent it from falling on the floor. If the radiator has not been cleaned for years, specialists recommend a more thorough cleaning. A flexible feather duster or a special radiator brush allows you to reach the internal areas. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with a fine nozzle or even steam, as long as the appliance allows it. A damp cloth with a few drops of neutral soap will suffice for the outside. Avoid abrasive or metallic products that could damage the paintwork.

Spending a few minutes on this task may seem insignificant, but it has a real impact: it improves air quality, reduces energy consumption and extends the life of your heating system. And, of course, it keeps your home cleaner and cosier, just what we need when winter comes knocking.
